Jarvis Cocker Lectures At In The City

Former Pulp leader Jarvis Cocker gave a lecture at Manchester's In The City music conference and festival yesterday (October 8) on the 'function of lyrics in popular music'.
The lecture, titled 'Saying The Unsayable', focused on what makes a good song lyric, labelling Des'ree's 'Life' as the worst song ever written, but praised songwriters like Nick Cave and David Bowie.
Cocker revealed: "The reason I'm here is because originally the idea of this was planted in my head by Tony Wilson (Factory Records boss)."
The former Pulp leader even held a professor's cane, picking out his own lyrics as well as those by The Beatles and Leonard Cohen.
The packed out auditorium was lucky enough to catch their own intimate gig, with Cocker readily picking up his guitar to outline his points in song.
