The Mercurys: And The Nominees Are...

added 22 July 2008 at 11.17

We were down at the Nationwide Mercury Prize nominations to bring you the list of nominees. It's wide open this year with a list as varied as it is surprising...

So this is it, the list of albums nominated by the Nationwide Mercury Prize. Any surprises? Yeah, just a bit... Any of the albums that we predicted? Of course there is. We have a way with these things. Just don't ask us about Lottery Numbers... it'll cost you.

So Radiohead, predictably enough, get a nomination but that's where the Mercurys-by-rote come to an end. Alex Turner makes it three nominations in a row with The Last Shadow Puppets and Elbow surely must be contenders after narrowly missing out in 2001. Gruff Rhys and Boom Bip's John Hughes-influenced outfit Neon Neon get the nod, as does folk hero Laura Marling. Big up British Sea Power, too.

And notable exceptions? Well, there must be a few record companies licking wounds and slashing marketing budgets as we speak. What happened to the following? M.I.A., Duffy, Foals, Kate Nash, The Kills and The Ting Tings. Coldplay, for the first time, also don't get a nomination.

So what's made the cut? This lot...

Adele - '19'
British Sea Power - 'Do You Like Rock Music?'
Burial - 'Untrue'
Elbow - 'The Seldom Seen Kid'
Estelle - 'Shine'
The Last Shadow Puppets - 'The Age Of The Understatement'
Laura Marling - 'Alas I Cannot Swim'
Neon Neon - 'Stainless Style'
Portico Quartet - 'Knee-Deep In The North Sea'
Robert Plant And Alison Krauss – 'Raising Sand'
Radiohead - 'In Rainbows'
Rachel Unthank And The Winterset – 'The Bairns'
